Expo 2015 in Milan

145 countries, 20 million visitors

Since May 1st, Milan has been host to the 2015 World Fair. The city offers an exceptional environment to showcase the discoveries and innovative ideas proposed in response to this year’s theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” For six months, Milan’s rich culture and Italian gastronomy will be at the heart of this event involving 145 participating countries. Over 20 million visitors are expected on the site covering more than 110 hectares, which required investments of nearly 12 billion euros.

Inside their respective pavilions, the various countries hold activities and happenings where architecture, design, flavours, nature and science unite to create a breathtaking experience. Expo 2015 is a chance for Italy to celebrate its culture and traditions, in addition to leaving a lasting legacy for citizens and visitors alike.

Since the first World Fair was held in London in 1851, these events are organized every five years or so. Montreal was host to Expo 67 and still enjoys the social, architectural and cultural legacy of the fair. And let’s not forget Paris’s Expo 1889, for which the legendary Eiffel Tower was built.

Feeding the Planet

According to estimates, 870 million people on earth are underfed, while others die from a poor diet or from overeating. Furthermore, every year, 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted. One of the objectives of Milan’s Expo 2015 is to draw attention to nutrition and food safety issues worldwide, to foster dialogue and to facilitate the search for solutions.

The event is also the perfect occasion for sharing and celebrating. That is why Cirque du Soleil will be presenting an exclusive show called “Allavita!”

If you are passionate about food, culture and Italy (who isn’t?), you simply must plan a trip to the region this summer. Milan’s Expo 2015 will last for six months, ending on October 31st.
